Military Funeral route details for Thursday 29th July 2010

29 July, 2010 - 11:00

The funeral service for Trooper James Leverett of Rawmarsh takes place at Sheffield Cathedral at 12noon Thursday 29th July 2010.

Trooper Leverett was killed whilst serving with the Royal Dragoon Guards in Afghanistan.

The cortege will leave Rawmarsh at approximately 11:10am travelling to Sheffield Cathedral via the route supplied in the attached document arriving at Sheffield Cathedral at approximately 11:55am.

The funeral service will conclude at approximately 12:50pm following which there will be a private burial.

Teenager sentenced to life in prison for murder

In September 2008, 18-year-old Dale Robertson was fatally stabbed during a disturbance in the street on Rokeby Drive, Parson Cross, Sheffield, after a party. The disagreement had begun following a dispute over a stolen video game, and escalated, with tragic consequences.

Four arrested after nightclub disturbance

Police are investigating a disturbance at Niche nightclub in Sheffield that happened around 4am this morning, Sunday, 18 July.

The disturbance involved two groups of men and as a result, five men were taken to hospital with knife-inflicted wounds but none are understood to have sustained life-threatening injuries.

Four men have been arrested in connection with this incident and enquiries are continuing.

Anyone with information about this incident should call South Yorkshire Police on 0114 2202020.

Enquiries ongoing after stabbing incident in Sheffield

Officers are investigating a stabbing incident that happened late yesterday evening in the Nether Edge area of Sheffield.

Police received reports of an incident around 11.10pm last night, Friday, 16 July, on Woodstock Road outside St Peter’s Church Hall.

As a result of the incident, a 40-year-old man was taken to hospital with stab wounds. His injuries were not life threatening and he was later released from hospital.

Woodstock Road to Abbeydale Road was closed following the incident but reopened around 1.20am.

Police statement regarding Kimberworth firearm allegations

At around 9.30am this morning, Friday, 16 July, a man reported to police that he had been threatened by someone known to him near to an address in the Kimberworth area of Rotherham.

Further reports were received from members of the public nearby that describe an argument between the two men, both of whom are known to police, one apparently in possession of what looked like a firearm.

Officers believe that at no stage during this incident was anyone threatened with a weapon. There is no suggestion a firearm was discharged and no one has been reported injured.

Four sentenced over fake fags operation

Four of the five people involved in a counterfeit cigarette operation have been sentenced today, Friday, 16 July, 2010, at Doncaster Crown Court.

Darren Remmington was sentenced to two-and-a-half year’s imprisonment for his part in Operation Liquidate.

Jennifer Saunders was given a 12-month sentence suspended for two years. She also received a six-month curfew from 7pm to 7am.

Recorded crime continues to fall in South Yorkshire

Vehicle crimes, house burglaries and criminal damage offences are all down in South Yorkshire as recorded crime continues to fall.

Total violent crime has also fallen, this category including reductions in robbery and violence against the person offences but a rise in sex offences.

Drug offences have increased slightly but fraud and forgery, and theft and handling stolen goods offences, are both down.

Gun crimes (excluding air weapons) and knife crimes have also seen a reduction.

South Yorkshire Police is urging Facebook users across the countyto add a new application to make them safer online.

The UK’s national law enforcement agency dedicated to child protection – the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre - and Facebook, the biggest social networking site, have joined forces to develop the initiative.

SNT issue crime prevention advice at local gala in Barnsley

Royston Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) spent the day engaging with members of the community at the Monk Bretton Gala, near Lamb Lane on Saturday 3 July.

Around 200 people attended the event to enjoy the various stalls and bouncy castles whilst the police used the opportunity to speak with locals, introduce themselves and answer any questions they had.

The SNT also handed out advice leaflets on property and self-safety.

South Yorkshire Police Sergeant, Howard Webb, to referee World Cup final

Howard Webb is to referee the World Cup final on Sunday.

Howard, 38, will become the first Englishman to referee the prestigious football tournament since 1974.

"It's a great achievement and we are delighted for him," said Assistant Chief Constable Andy Holt.

Kendray and Worsbrough SNT hold crime prevention advice event

Kendray and Worsbrough Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) spent a morning speaking to members of the community as part of a crime prevention advice day B&Q car park, Stairfoot on 23 June.

The engagement event is held monthly and allows police to answer any crime and safety questions and provide important crime prevention advice.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, Age Concern and the council’s Central Call were also there to meet and greet customers coming to and from the store.

Two men given final warnings for nuisance biking in Barnsley

Police issued two men with formal warnings after they were seen riding their off-road bikes illegally on land in Mapplewell.

Darton Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) is continuing efforts to crack down on nuisance motorcycling in the area despite the issue improving over recent months and being removed as a PACT priority (partners and communities together) by the local community.

Police increase patrols in Elsecar after serious sexual assault

Police and partners have stepped up patrols following a serious sexual assault on Thursday, 24 June, at the Dearne Valley Trail near to Elsecar Reservoir.


A 37-year-old, local man has been arrested in connection with the incident and released on bail until mid-September while further enquiries are made.


Meanwhile, officers are still appealing for anyone with information or those who can identify an e-fit of the suspect (see below) to contact police immediately.

Police crackdown on speeding in Penistone

Seven motorists were issued with £60 speeding fines during a one-day operation run by Penistone Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) last month.

One 16 June, officers worked with the Safety Camera Partnership (SCP) to tackle the issue of speeding on some of the area’s roads after it was highlighted as a PACT (partners and communities together) priority by concerned members of the public.
