South Yorkshire Police have identified key roads within the Road Policing East area that have high rates of road traffic collisions.

Many of the identified roads or routes have enforcement Restrictions such as speed, obstruction and contravention of signage or traffic lights.

1. A6109 Meadowbank Road at junction 34 of the M1 to its junction with the A629 Wortley Road in Rotherham, has been identified as one of the aforementioned routes. It forms a major arterial route through the Rotherham area with strong links to the M1 motorway and Meadowhall Shopping Centre. It affords links with many residential areas, the town centre, schools and areas of leisure and entertainment.

Information suggests that for the A6109 problems are excessive speed.

The operation will run during the months of November, December and January.

In line with the Road Policing Strategy and Road Policing Commitment we will work with partnerships to educate road users and enforce legislation. This will assist to reduce the criminal and anti-social use of motor vehicles and reduce road casualties throughout the identified route

It is anticipated that public confidence and re-assurance will be greatly enhanced by the concentrated efforts of high visibility patrols and the feedback of results through community groups and forums.

Officers will identify suitable areas/locations where speed enforcement or identification of offenders may be carried out. Attention should be given to locations where high pedestrian volume may create potential conflict with motor vehicles. Such locations may be schools at the beginning and end of lessons, shopping areas and public houses at busy periods.

Officers will also identify that evenings and weekends are when the routes are frequented by drivers acting in an anti social manner and attention should be given at these times where appropriate.

Officers will engage with the public to offer appropriate advice and education where necessary. Publicity of the ‘campaign’ is to be encouraged.

It is expected that high profile policing will achieve greater results and awareness therefore marked patrol cars staffed by officers in high visibility clothing will be deployed.

PS Baines (Rotherham North SNA) will ensure education is taken into schools and community groups and publicise the operation and provide feedback at PACT and Parish Council meetings. SNT’s will also identify ‘Stop and Check’ points working with partnerships at key locations.
