Antisocial behaviour on Wadsley Lane (nr Granville's store) and the gennel leading to Walders Avenue, Wadsley between 4pm and 1

We asked:

What issues concerned you most in your area

You said:

At the PACT meeting held on Thursday 23rd September 2010 you told us that you were concerned by antisocial behaviour caused by groups of youths hanging about on Wadsley Lane, especially outside Granville's Store, and also on the gennel which runs from Wadsley Lane up to Walders Avenue.

Date of priority:
23 Sep 2010
We did:

We have increased patrols in the area by officers in cars, on foot and on bikes. This way we can get down the gennel and speak to youths hanging about there.

We're also speaking to local residents to get more information about the groups of youths and the times that they generally appear. This way we can make sure we are there when we are needed and so we can deal with any problems effectively.

UPDATE for October

Since this was put in place as a PACT priority we haven't had anymore reports of antisocial behaviour in the area. As such the PACT meeting on 22nd November decided to discontinue it as a priority.

Antisocial Behaviour and Nuisance Vehicles in Hillsborough Park and surrounding roads (between 5pm and 11pm)

We asked:

What issues concerned you most in your area

You said:

You were worried about antisocial behaviour and vehicles causing a nuisance in Hillsborough Park in the evenings.

This PACT priority was retained at every PACT meeting since then, upto and including the most recent on 27th January 2011.

At the meeting held on 26th August 2010 it was ammended to include Burnell Road and Park View Road, and the times were extended to between 5pm and 11pm.

At the PACT meeting on 23rd September this priority was retained again, but extended further to cover Hawksley Avenue as well.

At the PACT meeting on 21st October this priority was retained again, but extended to cover Middlewood Road, especially by the shops around KFC.

Date of priority:
25 Mar 2010
Approximate times of offence:

Between 6pm and 11pm.

We did:

Our first response to this issue will be to simply increase the amount of patrol time spent by officers and community officers in the park and surrounding streets. A higher visibilty presence will deter trouble makers, and also mean we can better deal with those who do cause problems.

UPDATE for APRIL

The PACT priority has been flagged up to the Neighbourhood Patrol Groups (NPGs), the officers who deal with immediate incidents called to the police, on duty 24 hours a day. This means that, as well as the SNT staff, the NPG officers will also pay attention to the area whenever they get some patrol time free in between incidents.

UPDATE for JUNE

In June community officers (PCSOs) spent 257 hours of active patrol time in the Hillsborough area, much of which was spent in and around the park. This is in addition to the police officers time. This has contributed to the reduction of reported incidents in the area.

UPDATE for JULY

The SNT has also been able to enlist the help of specialist units from the police Operational Support Service, which includes officers on horseback and Taskforce officers. Mounted officers are obviously perfect for use in parkland, as they can cover ground quickly and can see over the whole park from their position. The Taskforce officers are specially trained teams working out of vans, meaning that they can cover the whole area between them.

These units will be coming through the park regularly throughout the summer, in order to keep an eye out for the safety and peace of mind of all the park's users.

UPDATE for AUGUST

Figures for the month of July show that we only had one reported incident of antisocial behaviour within the park, and no crimes reported to the police. This has dropped from four incidents and two crimes in June. This shows that the highly visible patrols in the area are working, dicouraging people from behaving badly or committing crime.

UPDATE for September

We're continuing to patrol in the park, but we're now extending the patrols to cover more of the roads adjoining the park. We're aware that the pedestrian entrances to the park off some of the roads sometimes serve as a place to gather for some youths, and this can cause a nuisance and noise for local residents. We're going into those areas to direct the groups off the street and into the park, as a much more appropriate place to gather together.

UPDATE for October

We are continuing to patrol in the areas mentioned and respond to incidents reported to us. We now have a van of officers dedicated to antisocial behaviour working every night of the week, aimed at tackling issues like this. Last weekend a group of youths were reported in KFC. Officers removed them from the premises and searched them all for fireworks or knives. None were in possession of either.

UPDATE for April

Following further consultation with residents in the area it was decided that the recent introduction of gates on the carpark entrance in Hillsborough park had been effective in stopping nuisance motor vehicles frequenting the location. As such we are discontinuing this PACT priority, and rolling other aspects of it into a new priority that takes account of this.

If you have any information in relation to this, or any other priority, in the area, please call the SNT direct on 0114 296 4912 and leave a message, or dial 101 for police callhandlers at any time.

Anti Social Behaviour on Rural Lane, Ben Lane and Hallowmoor Road, Wisewood between 4pm and 10pm

We asked:

What issues concerned you most in your area

You said:

At the PACT meeting held on 25th March 2010 you told us that you were concerned by antisocial behaviour on Rural Lane, Ben Lane and Hallowmoor Road, Wisewood between 4pm and 10pm.

This PACT priority has been retained at every PACT meeting since it was introduced, up to and including the most recent meeting on 26th August 2010.

Date of priority:
25 Mar 2010
Approximate times of offence:

Between 4pm and 10pm.

We did:

Our first response to this issue will be to simply increase the amount of patrol time spent by officers and community officers in the Wisewood area. A higher visibilty presence will deter trouble makers, and also mean we can better deal with those who do cause problems.

UPDATE for MAY

The PACT priority has been flagged up to the Neighbourhood Patrol Groups (NPGs), the officers who deal with immediate incidents called to the police, on duty 24 hours a day. This means that, as well as the SNT staff, the NPG officers will also pay attention to the area whenever they get some patrol time free in between incidents.

We have also had a CCTV camera installed at the junction of Ben Lane and Rural Lane. The camera moves around and covers the streets off the junction and the area in front of the shops, which has traditionally been a place where youths hang about and can cause problems.

UPDATE for JUNE

In June community officers (PCSOs) spent 112 hours of active patrol time in Wisewood, much of which was spent in and around the Ben Lane area. This is in addition to the police officers time. This has contributed to the reduction of reported incidents in the area.

We have also been sucessful in seizing alcohol from under-age drinkers. The alcohol has been disposed of down the drain, and letters have been sent out to their parents to advise them of what their children have been getting up to.

UPDATE for JULY

We're continuing to deploy our specialist cycle officers and community officers in the Deer Park area. We are aware that much of the antisocial behaviour happens on the parks and fields in the area, making it difficult for officers in cars to follow youths if they move about or run off. Officers on marked mountain bikes are able to cover this ground, quickly and easily and so have more of an impact in the area.

In July PCSOs conducted a further 127 hours of active patrols in the area, much of it on foot, as well as on bikes and in cars.

UPDATE for AUGUST

Analysis of figures for incidents and crimes reported to the police show that these roads have had five incidents of antisocial behaviour on them in the last month. This is down by half of the ten incidents of antisocial behaviour on the same streets in the month before. This shows that the police presence in the area is working to deter and prevent antisocail behaviour and crime.

The SNT have recently run a series of 'test purchases' for licensed premises in the area. One shop in the Wisewood area did fail, and we will be taking action through the courts to deal with this shop, and potentially review their license to sell alcohol. This is one of the ways which we will act to stop alcohol getting to underage drinkers, in order to stop it from fueling antisocial behviour.

If you have any information in relation to this, or any other priority, in the area, please call the SNT direct on 0114 296 4912 and leave a message, or dial 101 for police callhandlers at any time.

We did:

**Last Months Activity**

( Previous PACT Objective - Anti Social Behaviour/ Underage drinking in Rural Lane)

**Increased Patrol Activity in PACT areas**

As part of our commitment to the 'Policing Pledge' we are keen to engage with communities and focus our activities on issues relevant to them.  Nine priorities have been identified as important to the the community. We have increased Police Patrols, resulting in an extra 127 police visits to the areas identified. This is on top of 'normal'  police patrol activity and should see a noticable increase in police visibility.

**Male arrested for damage with assistance of police helicopter**

During the late evening of Monday the 16th of March 2009 officers were called to the Hillsborough area after a male was seen to damage a  motor vehicle. The Force Helicopter was alerted and with their assistance a suspect was located making his way from the scene. This male was arrested and subsequently charged with an offence of Criminal Damage.  Anti Social Behaviour and Criminal Damage are of serious concern to the Public and South Yorkshire Police.  We treat your calls seriously and will take positive action against those committing such offences.

**Anti Social Behaviour Operation Conducted in Wisewood/Rodney Hill/ Aldene Road**

A concerted operation was conducted to tackle these issues, involving local Police and Community Support Officers. Mounted Police Officers were also involved and provided a highly visible and supportive police presence in the community. This has ran throughout February and resulted in a noticeable reduction in incidents of Anti Social behaviour.  We are determined to make you feel safe and secure in your community.
