Antisocial behaviour on South Road between 4pm and 11pm

We asked:

What issues concerned you most in your area?

You said:

At the PACT meeting on 24th June 2010 you told us that you were concerned by antisocial behaviour on South Road between 4pm and 10pm.

This PACT priority has been agreed and continued at subsequent meetings, including the most recent one in February 2011.

Date of priority:
24 Jun 2010
We did:

We have increased patrols by officers and community officers in the area of South Road, in cars, on foot and using police cyclists. We've also made the response team officers aware of the issues, so that they allocate patrol time to the area when they're available.

UPDATE for July

We're also extending a scheme into Walkley with community officers visiting local residents and shops to give out information and make sure that people know the best way to contact the local Safer Neighbourhood Team with any concerns.

UPDATE for August

We are aware that there are issues relating to the flats above the shops on South Road next to Greenhow Street. Some of these flats are empty and we have had reports of youths congregating near them and trying to gain access to the derelict properties. we're currently trying to work with the properties' owners to secure the premises properly and to prevent youths from being able to climb onto the roof.

The SNT have recently run a series of 'test purchases' for licensed premises in the area. One shop in the Walkley area did fail, and we will be taking action through the courts to deal with this shop, and potentially review their license to sell alcohol. This is one of the ways which we will act to stop alcohol getting to underage drinkers, in order to stop it from fueling antisocial behviour.

UPDATE for September

We have recently had a CCTV camera put up on South Road. Local shopkeepers and residents have told us that this has dramatically cut incidents of antisocial behaviour in the area.

UPDATE for October

The last month has seen antisocial behaviour in Walkley, and especially South Road, continue to fall. Even over Halloween and Bonfire night, which traditionally have led to an increase in antisocial behaviour, an increased police presence and robust dealing with troublemakers is working.

UPDATE for January

The colder weather over the winter seems to have had a further effect on reducing groups of youths hanging about on the street and causing problems.

UPDATE for MARCH

Following consultation with local residents, business owners and people at the PACT meetig on Thursday 24th March, it was agreed to remove this location as a PACT priority.

If you have any information in relation to this, or any other priority, in the area, please call the SNT direct on 0114 296 4912 and leave a message, or dial 101 for police callhandlers at any time.

You said:

At the PACT meeting held on 24th June 2010 you told us that you were concerned by antisocial behaviour on Martin Street, particularly the Burlington, Bond and Oxford Blocks, especially between 4pm and 10pm.

This PACT priority was agreed and kept on in subsquent PACT meetings, upto and including the most recent on on 23rd September.

Date of priority:
24 Jun 2010
Approximate times of offence:

Between 4pm and 12am

We did:

Since this was set as a policing priority for us at a PACT meeting we have ensured that police patrols in the area have increased. During the evenings officers are patrolling the area in cars, on foot and on mountain bikes, looking for groups who may be causing trouble. When a group is seen the officers stop them and find out who they are and what they're doing. If they're committing crime they are arrested or if they're behaving in an antisocial way their details are recorded and they are moved on from the area. We then send letters to their parents telling them about their child's behaviour.

UPDATE for August

We are obviously aware of the recent incident when a large fight broke out on Oxford Street and one male was taken to hospital. The SNT are working with CID and other specialist units in the police to deal with this, and a number of people have been arrested in relation to this incident.

UPDATE for September

Since the large fight last month the area has calmed down and we have had no recurrence or reaction to it. An investigation, lead by CID, is still going on into what happened and we are looking to prosecute those responsible for any offences.

If you have any information in relation to this, or any other priority, in the area, please call the SNT direct on 0114 296 4912 and leave a message, or dial 101 for police callhandlers at any time.
