Fraudsters tend to have similar characteristics when trying to scam us out of our money – the power of persuasion, a personal tone and a professional manner. Offenders want you to believe that they are something that they are not.

Barnsley police would like to raise awareness of a recent case, the offender has contacted a resident via telephone claiming to be from their bank asking for personal and bank details. The reason for this is that their alleged bank wanted to pay back an underpayment of hundreds of pounds.

Crime Prevention Officer for Barnsley police stated, “We are urging residents to be particularly cautious when giving out any details over the phone, never give out any information, unless you are certain who is on the other end of the phone.

Try to find out as much as possible about the caller before giving out any information. If you have any suspicions then do not give any details out – a genuine caller will understand your security concerns.”

Please contact Barnsley’s Crime Prevention Officers if you have any concerns regarding these issues on 01226 736017.
