One of the most frequent complaints we receive is about under age drinking from groups of youths in the street. One of the tactics we use is to test the off licences to see if they are selling to under age customers.
On the night of 10th June we sent a 15 year old girl into 10 shops in the Rotherham South area and although 8 shops passed and declined to serve her, two others failed. These were in the Canklow and East Dene area. The shop assistant is given an £80 fixed penalty ticket and the licensee is reported to the licensing authority for further action.
The sale of alcohol to young people is a serious issue as it fuels anti-social behaviour in our communities. We will continue to carry out similar operations in the future.
